Nathan
Chapman Memorial Fund
Honoring an American Hero
On January 4, 2002 near the city of Khost,
Afghanistan, First Sergeant Nathan Ross Chapman became the
first American soldier killed by enemy fire in the War on
Terror. Sergeant Chapman had volunteered for a very dangerous
mission, working alongside CIA operatives, to coordinate actions
with local tribal leaders. When his tiny convoy was attacked,
Sgt. Chapman, though mortally wounded, continued to return
fire to cover the escape of his comrades until he lost consciousness.
His heroic actions are credited with saving their lives.
In Georgetown, Texas, the home of Nathan’s parents,
Will and Lynn Chapman, The Nathan Chapman Memorial Fund is
raising funds to create a lasting memorial to Sgt. Chapman
and to all of those who have given their lives or continue
to serve in this War on Terror. Bob Pack has been commissioned
to complete this important tribute.
The statue, which will stand in a memorial plaza at the entrance
of the Williamson County Justice Center will be funded entirely
by private donations. In addition to recognition on a donors’
plaque, those who contribute $3000 or more will receive a
limited edition maquette (approximately 1/6 scale) bronze
replica of the statue. No more than fifty of these bronzes
will be cast.
